Buying Running Socks
Running Socks
Again, one of the areas in which some runners consistently let themselves down. After spending considerable amounts of money on new pairs of shoes, some runners then resort to wearing conventional sports socks which offer inadequate features and cushioning whilst absorbing and holding moisture like a sponge.
Good running socks are designed to help protect feet from the damaging effects of impact and blistering commonly associated with running. However, although in a dream world we would all run in luxuriously padded socks, in reality, most runners wear different types of sock according to their individual needs and circumstances. Generally speaking, a thinner, lighter weight sock will be more responsive and so ultimately be better for racing in but at the expense of comfort and protection. Conversely, a sock with more cushioning will naturally offer more protection but at the expense of weight and responsiveness. In addition to the degree of padding, when purchasing new socks for longer, up to marathon length runs, it is also essential to choose a style which is made of fabric which will actively move moisture away from the foot. Failure to do so, will inevitably lead to a build up of moisture which will render the foot more susceptible to blistering. Note though that we appreciate that not everybody can afford to run in top of the range socks every day of the week, which is why we introduced our oen Everyday Running Socks which offers conventional technical features at a price which leaves others standing. Noteable features to look for are as follows:
- Lycra ankle cuffs to help prevent the socks sliding down whilst running.
- Terry pad helps to provide cushioning and protection against abrasion and impact.
- Y Heel construction-this enhances the fit which allows the socks to follow the natural contours of the foot.
- Support zone around the sole and across the top of the foot. This allows the sock to stay in place and offers a firm, supportive fit around the arch of the foot.
- A flat toe seam-this helps to prevent blisters as there is no pronounced seam to rub against the toes.
- Flexible foot breaks-these allow the sock to flex inline with the foot without any bunching of fabric.
- Mesh zones to enhance ventilation and comfort. Normally found in lighterweight performance socks.
- Technical fibres such as Coolmax which actively moisture away from the skin. More affordable socks would use a higher content of cotton which is not quite as ideal for longer runs. The upside of using cotton being the cost saving.
